The mission of the Delaware Geological Survey (DGS) includes the systematic investigation of the hydrology of Delaware, exploration and research pertaining to the water, mineral, and other Earth resources, preparation of reports and maps presenting its findings, and provision of information and advice to the officials and citizens of Delaware. Under limited direction of the Director, the Database Applications Manager must have an advanced technical understanding of data management, statistics, analysis, visualization, and web-based data distribution methods. Experience and skills in scripting and programming languages including Windows cmd and bat files, R, Python, PL/SQL, FORTRAN, C, and general support of IT services and familiarity with Drupal content management systems are highly desirable. The position will require the tracking of trends in data sharing protocols, standards, and technology at the State, regional, national, and international levels.


Serves as DGS web master.
Develops and administers DGS online mapping applications and content management systems.
Installs and maintains server-side technology in support of web-based applications.
Acts with DGS Information Technology personnel to provide backup support for DGS computer desktop systems, network servers, and software applications.
Implements protocols and methods for DGS data sharing and distribution.
Builds and hosts open and interoperable web services to support geospatial mapping and metadata dissemination.
Represents DGS interests in environmental data collection, monitoring, analysis, modeling, and distribution activities within UD and throughout the State.
 Researches and interprets global, University, and industry-based trends in technology of hydrologic, geologic, hydrogeologic, statistical, and geospatial analysis.
Recommends courses of actions for future directions of DGS through prioritization of purchases and system evaluation.
Maintains broad technical and scientific knowledge of geospatial and time series data processing techniques and algorithms, statistical and analytical methods, and environmental data collection activities.
Supports and participates with DGS staff in writing proposals and planning appropriate budgets through collaboration with colleagues within DGS, CEOE, and the University of Delaware to internal, State, federal, and other research grant program opportunities.
Maintain information technology services in compliance with university policy.


Master's degree in computer science, data systems management, or related discipline with a minimum of five years of experience.
Knowledge and experience working with geoscience data, or other physical science data is highly desirable.
Strong written skills: ability to organize and write proposals, technical reports, and other informational materials.
Proficiency in the management and manipulation of large geospatial and time-series data sets.
Ability to develop web-based applications using languages and libraries such as PHP, Python, R, SQL, XML, javascript, Query, OpenLayers, Google Maps API, HighCharts, and CSS.
Experience in hosting OGC-compliant web mapping services (WMS, WFS, WCS), and PHP scripting to Postgres database for maintaining map services and data sharing.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to apply technical solutions to solving problems with data management, data sharing, and web applications.
Effective oral presentation and communication skills.
Ability to effectively collaborate with research team members within and outside the DGS.
Demonstrated an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.
