Geological Society of America (GSA) Annual Meeting – Denver, CO
David Wunsch participated in a short course co-sponsored by GSA and the American Geosciences Institute titled: “Preparing for a Career in the Geosciences”.
Wunsch made a presentation regarding careers in hydrogeology, with emphasis in landing careers in government, along with personal and professional career insights, special skills needed, and the outlook for future employment. Wunsch then served on a panel with other presenters and answered questions from student and faculty in attendance.
Course Abstract:
This course will provide shared experiences of professional geoscientists from a range of subdisciplines (environmental, oil and gas, hazard assessment and mitigation, mineral exploration and mining, engineering, hydrogeology, GIS/3D modeling/dbase management, ethics in the workplace) to help undergraduate, graduate students, and faculty identify skills and competencies critical to employment. In addition, real-life case studies and examples of job tasks will provide students and faculty with practical knowledge about the work-functions of different geoscience occupations. For faculty, the course will review tools and practical examples to integrate into their curriculum appropriate to preparing students for a career in our discipline.
