Development of a High Water Mark Database and Display System for Coastal Flooding Events in Delaware

DGS is building a database and web distribution system to collect, manage, and display high water marks (HWMs) that are observed throughout Delaware as a result of flooding events. Historical peak water levels can be extracted for past storms or for a selected geographic area. Development is being done in partnership with the Office of the Delaware State Climatologist, the Delaware Environmental Observing System (DEOS) and the Delaware Environmental Monitoring and Analysis Center (DEMAC).

Delaware Geologic Mapping Program (STATEMAP)

The Delaware Geological Survey has a continuing program to map the geology of the entire state at the detailed scale of 1:24,000. The STATEMAP component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program has contributed significantly to our surficial geologic mapping program. This work has resulted in not only new geologic mapping, but also the digital compilation of previous mapping. Products of this program include file formats that can be downloaded and printed from the web as geologic map products and imported into GIS software as georeferenced layers.

NEWRnet - North East Water Resources Network

The North East Water Resources (NEWRnet) consortium of EPSCoR jurisdictions of Delaware (DE), Rhode Island (RI), and Vermont (VT) will create an advanced sensor network in watersheds for gathering high-frequency, spatially-extensive water quality and quantity data and a network of lab and field-based experiments and agent-based models to investigate how to align sensor data and their visualization with utilization by stakeholders. DGS is participating in the watershed sensing network by installing and operating a nitrogen and organic carbon sensor and stream discharge monitoring station in the Murderkill River watershed, and collaborating with the project team to interpret results.

A Coastal Flood Monitoring System for Delaware

During the last two decades, storms such as Hurricanes Katrina and Ike along the Gulf of Mexico and Floyd and Hugo along the Atlantic Coast of the United States have resulted in significant loss of life, injuries, and property damages exceeding well over 100 billion dollars. Much of the damage associated with these and other tropical and extra-tropical weather systems is associated with severe coastal flooding. The purpose of this project is to develop a real-time coastal flood monitoring and warning system for the coastal communities in Kent County, Delaware. This system will serve as a prototype for similar early-warning systems, which may then be applied along the entire Delaware coast.

OneGeology

DGS participates in OneGeology initiative

OneGeology (http://www.onegeology.org/) is an international effort to make available digital geologic map data from around the world. DGS participates in OneGeology by submitting two web map services, one for 1:100K scale surficial geologic units and one for 1:100K scale surficial geologic contacts. These services are open and interoperable (supporting both WMS and WFS protocols) with data attributes in GeoSciML-Portrayal format.

2013 Delaware Geological Survey Data Preservation Proposal

The Delaware Geological Survey has submitted a grant proposal for National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program (NGGDPP) funds to preserve our well schedules and outcrop records by converting the paper records to digital PDF files. This NGGDPP grant request will be the first step in making these invaluable records and data available to our stakeholders via the internet. In order to ensure that the research is objective, the data must be preserved and retrievable for both DGS researchers and for stakeholders that wish to review or use the data. Once scanned and filed digitally, these records can be organized in a database with a web application front end to make them searchable and downloadable.

Delaware Geologic Information Resource (DGIR) Map Viewer

The Delaware Geologic Information Resource (DGIR) is an online data display tool and map viewer for a variety of geologic and hydrologic information released by the Delaware Geological Survey. It was designed to deliver the most commonly available and requested geologic and hydrologic information that is appropriate for use in hydrologic studies, required by regulation and ordinance, and to support state resource management decisions.

Evaluation of Rapid Infiltration Basin Systems (RIBS)

This study has evaluated pre-treatment and physical and geochemical components of rapid infiltration basin systems (RIBS). The project was begun in 2008 with an evaluation of performance of treatment plants associated with RIBS in Delaware, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and New Jersey. Field and simulation evaluations of a RIBS located at Cape Henlopen State Park were completed in 2011. Simulation studies of infiltration and nitrogen cycling in the vadose zone were completed in early 2013. Multiple conference presentations, reports, and articles are now being released.
