On Jan. 13, 2021, John Callahan, associate scientist at the Delaware Geological Survey, presented at the 101st American Meteorological Society (AMS) 2021 annual meeting, the world’s largest yearly gathering for the weather, water and climate community.

Groundwater response to extreme rainfall event – eastern Sussex County

Date

During an extreme rainfall event that occurred September 29-30, 2016, more than 12 inches in one day, caused the water table to rise over 5 feet near Harbeson, Delaware. A subsequent 3.6 inch storm on October 8 - 9 caused the water table to rise above land surface and flood the area for nearly 8 hours.

Regional partners to focus on sea-level rise in Delaware

A new partnership of scientists and federal officials from Delaware to Virginia will take a regional look at sea-level rise and how best to prepare for the impacts, including shoreline loss and increased flooding from storms.

4:37 p.m., Oct. 31, 2012--The Office of the State Climatologist and the Delaware Geological Survey (DGS), both based at the University of Delaware, provided the Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) and the National Weather Service with weather, coastal flooding and stream flooding information for Delaware during Hurricane Sandy.
