Geology

The DGS’s geological investigations and services are focused on issues that impact the quality of life of citizens of the First State. Our studies of surficial and subsurface geology tell us about the earth materials we build on and use and the underground natural resources we use for water supplies. The data gained in these studies are critical for local, regional, and national planning, providing the basis for decisions about how society makes use of earth materials and systems in resource development and land use, transportation, water resources, public health, agriculture, waste disposal, environmental protection and restoration, education, and other applications.

Geologic investigations and services conducted by the DGS lie principally in the areas of 1) surficial geologic mapping, 2) studies of the subsurface geology of the aquifers that supply most of the state’s water resources, 3) studies of coastal geology, and 4) planning, response, and recovery services related to geologic hazards (e.g., floods and earthquakes). We also maintain activities related to mineral and energy resources. Our programs and services are structured to ensure our stakeholders benefit from our geological investigations and that geologic materials and data of value to the State and its citizens are preserved and archived.
